Welcome to My Second Grade Classroom

    Welcome to Mrs. Allen's Rookery!!
My name is Teresa Allen and I will be your child's teacher this year. This will be my 25th year in education, and my first in 2nd grade after 6 years in 1st here at WW.
I graduated from UNC Charlotte with my degree in Elementary Education.

    Educational Philosophy/Vision:
All children are special, all children have the ability to learn. It is up to us as the adults in their life to nurture that love of learning.
      Welcome to Second Grade!!!

We will begin our beginning of the year reading assessments after Labor Day. These tests will help us plan our lessons and target individual needs that will help them build strong reading skills. The information gathered from these assessments will be communicated to you on your child’s upcoming report cards.

Please make sure your child is reading nightly. It is very important that students read at least 20 minutes each day. After your child finishes reading, ask some of these questions: Where did the story happen? Who were the main characters in the story? What was the main idea of the story?

This quarter we will be working on:

ELA: We will begin launching our Daily Five and Reading Café strategies. Within the Daily Five students will be participating in the following centers: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Work on Writing.

We will begin to introduce story elements in a story and story structure. This include the characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end, and problem and solution. We will also begin to discover text features seen in non-fiction books and the purpose of these. We will also learn how to determine why a character responds a certain way in the book using details from the story to support our reasons.

LetterLand: We will begin reviewing Letterland and skills taught in First grade. We will be giving students a placement test to see what groups to create for LetterLand.  Our spelling words will come from your student’s LetterLand lists. Please practice these skills at home.

MATH: We will begin with solving addition and subtraction problems to 10. We will learn how to solve these mentally. We will focus on place value of numbers (tens and ones), along with skip counting. We will begin seeing numbers and lengths when we venture into measurement. In measurement we will learn how to measure length, different units, estimate length, and determine which is longer, number lines, line plots, and graphing. We will begin to tell time to the hour and half hour. We also will begin to learn about coins. We will learn how to identify them, the value of them, and adding them. We will begin Rocket math (math facts) and focus on addition to build our fluency on adding. We will begin to look at arrays and see how to create repeated addition from the arrays. Please work with your child at home on these math skills.

SCIENCE: We will be working on Matter in the STEM lab.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We will learn about
Government and Citizenship within the classroom, school, community and world.
